Die Nacht ist heiter und ist rein,So last Endellion we sang some Schubert. "Nachthelle", D.892. For high tenor solo (what the fach?) and TTBB chorus. I loved it then, for our penultimate concert, the late night choral one, my favourite of the festival. It helped that Mark Padmore was doing the solo, on account of him being amazing and all, but that Schubert chap knew how to write a piece of music, didn't he?
Im allerhellsten Glanz,
Die Häuser schau'n verwundert drein,
Steh'n übersilbert ganz.
In mir ist's hell so wunderbar,
So voll und übervoll,
Und waltet drinnen frei und klar,
Ganz ohne Leid und Groll.
Ich fass' in meinem Herzenshaus
Nicht all' das reiche Licht,
Es will hinaus, es muß hinaus,
Die letzte Schranke bricht.
I remembered it this evening as I boarded the train in Paddington to come back to Bristol. So I downloaded it onto my iPhone. Then I headed over to the International Music Score Library Project for the score, which I pulled up in PDF onto my iPad.
I spent the entire hour and a half listening to it and trying to subvocalise the tenor line. I hope I didn't disturb anyone nearby on the train. Then I got into the car and sang along to what I could remember. At top voice on the A38. Now I'm home and have it up on the speakers, and am singing along to the Andreas Staier version I downloaded from iTunes. I've apparently already played it 15 times all the way through on iTunes.
I am so utterly thrilled that this fits my voice. It's gorgeous. I need to work at the higher registers, and strive for greater security above the stave, but...this could be a tune for me. Is it a Lied? I'm not sure. But I love it deeply.
